When it comes to making cocktails, rum cocktails are the perfect place to start. This light and slightly spiced spirit is distilled from sugarcane. It is universally appealing and blends well with mixers for a wide variety of delicious drinks. Read on for our five favorite rum drinks to add to your repertoire.
With the sugarcane industry in the Carribean, it’s no surprise that the Piña Colada is the national drink of Puerto Rico. This popular tropical cocktail is very easy to make as well. While many versions of the Piña Colada are served slushie-style, a true Piña Colada doesn’t require a blender. Simply combine equal parts rum, coconut cream, and pineapple juice, shake, and serve over crushed ice. If you’re feeling extra fancy, garnish with a wedge of pineapple and delight your guest with your mixology skills and some gorgeous rum cocktails!
Despite the frozen fruity concoctions you often see at seaside resorts a true daiquiri is another cocktail that wasn’t originally made with a blender. A daiquiri is truly one of the most simple rum drinks out there. To create a classic daiquiri, mix 2 ounces of white rum, ¾ ounce simple syrup, and ¾ ounce lime in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a daiquiri glass. To add some fruit flavor to your daiquiri, substitute fruit-infused liquor or simple syrup. You can also add a fruit puree to the cocktail as well. Experiment with various flavors and have fun with this simple recipe.
The Dark ‘N’ Stormy is a cocktail invented and trademarked by Gosling Brothers, makers of Black Seal Rum.
Over the years Black Seal® Rum has become synonymous with Bermuda. It is an essential ingredient in Bermuda fish chowder, adds the island flavor to the Bermuda Rum Swizzle, and is the tempest in Bermuda’s favorite cocktail the Dark ‘n Stormy®.
To make a Dark ‘N’ Stormy, fill a highball glass with ice. Pour 4-5 ounces of Gosling’s Stormy Ginger Beer over the ice and top with Black Seal Rum. Garnish with a lime wedge if you prefer and enjoy an iconic twist on rum cocktails!
No list of rum cocktails would be complete without including a classic Mojito recipe. Over the years mojitos have proven themselves to be one of the most popular rum drinks out there. Even better, they are simple to make with no complicated ingredients. When making a mojito it is important to use fresh mint and lime as well as top-shelf rum. You’ll also need a muddler and stirring spoon. To make a mojito add two teaspoons of sugar, 6 to 8 mint leaves, and a splash of club soda to a highball glass. Muddle well to dissolve the sugar and release the flavor of the mint. Cut a lime in half and squeeze the juice from both sides into the glass, then add one of the halves to the glass itself. Add 2 ounces of light rum, top with ice, and fill the glass with club soda. Stir well and enjoy, garnishing with a mint sprig if you like.
With both light and dark rums, the Hurricane is a refreshing and powerful cocktail. The ingredient list for this drink is longer but the end product is well worth it! To make this tropical concoction combine 2 ounces each of light rum, dark rum, and passion fruit juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Add 1 ounce of orange juice, juice of half a lime, one tablespoon of grenadine, and one tablespoon of simple syrup. Shake the cocktail vigorously until the outside of the shaker begins to get frosty. Strain into a hurricane glass and garnish with a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry. Rum cocktails like this one will truly impress your guests when entertaining!
