What Luxury Design in 2018 Looks Like at Stockholm Design Week
There are few geographic regions in the world whose design aesthetic is as strong, and as popular, as Scandinavia. Scandi design is enormously popular throughout the world for its simple, modern, clean style. Many people associate Scandinavian design with inexpensive, assemble-it-yourself furniture, but there are plenty of high-end Scandi pieces to beautify your home. Perhaps the best place to learn more about high end Scandinavian style is at the annual Stockholm Design Week.
What Stockholm Design Week Is
Stockholm Design Week bills itself as “the most important week of the year for Scandinavian Design, where just about everyone in anyway connected to or interested in Scandinavian design meet and thrive, bringing home new impulses, contacts and inspiration.” This trade show allows buyers and enthusiasts to see the latest designs from the world of Scandinavian decor. These are some of our favorite designers who participated in this year’s show.
Lambert et Fils is a lighting design studio based in Montréal. The simplicity of its graceful, poetic lights is born of meticulous design explorations at every stage of development as it strives to create an emotional rapport between the human and the object. Its collections are conceived, designed and hand-assembled in its atelier in Montréal.
Lambert and Fils founder Samuel Lambert originally chose a different career path. After years in the world of film editing, he made the jump to home design. Now he combines his gift for visual design with the skills he learned working in his father’s pottery studio to create gorgeous lighting. His elegant and minimal light fixtures belie the effort and craftsmanship that go into each piece.
We especially love the brand’s Laurent collection. The contrast of color and shape makes a striking and modern statement in your home.
The Laurent Collection distills the milk globe to its essential relationship between circle and sphere. A series of thin forms compliment the Laurent globes—forms that carve through space, moving between line, surface, and volume. These forms combine in endless patterns, making it possible for an installation of Laurent lamps to inhabit any space with subtlety and quiet strength.
Hem is a Stockholm-based independent design studio creating a new generation of sustainable furniture, accessories and lighting. Together with vanguard designers and renowned European manufacturers, Hem crafts iconic products for homes and workplaces.
The only Stockholm-based company on our list, Hem designs quintessentially Scandinavian designs. Their direct-to-customer business model and dedication to sustainability are just two reasons to love this chic brand. Together with vanguard designers and renowned European manufacturers, Hem crafts iconic products for homes and workplaces all around the world.
Hem designer Luca Nichetto created a new version of the iconic Alphabeta Pendant Lamp in time for this year’s Stockholm Design Week. This mod lamp is fully customizable to suit your specific needs.
When designing Alphabeta Lamp, I wanted to create a system, in which you can combine shades to create your very own lamp. I wanted to allow the users to create their customized lamps by combining different pieces – like letters in the alphabet.
As a brand based in Finland, where quality, aesthetics and functionality are important values, Iittala believes in design that lasts a lifetime. Today, Iittala is a leading Scandinavian design brand for interior and dining.
Finish brand Iittala creates gorgeous pieces for your home to combat modern “throw away” culture. Their pieces are expertly crafted to be mult-functional, beautiful and durable. Pieces that you will keep in your home for a very long time.
While we appreciate the style and artisanship of all of the products Iittala creates, the Alvar Aalto Collection embodies Scandinavian style so well. Any piece from this collection would be a worthwhile investment for those who love Scandinavian design.
Each in every vase in the Alvar Aalto Collection continues to be mouth blown at the Iittala factory and comes in a wide range of colors and sizes. The Collection is a staple of modern Scandinavian design and Iittala’s most iconic series. Additional items inspired by Aalto and created by Pentagon Design such as steel bowls, wooden platters and votives can also be found in the Alvar Aalto Collection.
We are excited to see what else these talented designers have in store for us in the coming year. Have you incorporated Scandinavian design into your home? Maybe luxury Italian furniture is more your style?
