The world of furniture design is constantly changing because of designers like those featured here. These five designers push the envelope of design to advance the industry into new and wonderful territory.
Jake Phipps is a British designer specializing in unique highly engineered furniture pieces. His award-winning STELLAR collection features elegant metallic shapes that evoke natural crystal formations. His pieces effectively marry sleek modern materials with organic form.
Family owned furniture manufacturer Bernhardt Design has been in business for over 120 years. Although its rural North Carolina roots are humble, Bernhardt is a leading global furniture company. Bernhardt designer Océane Delain’s Mellow sofa won the 2016 ICFF Editors’ Award for Seating.
Based out of Milan, Setsu & Shinobu ITO works in a variety of design fields, not just furniture. Their 2016 design ILY-I is a battery-powered movable, intelligent armchair which creates a personal, furniture-like mobility solution for those with disabilities. This design won the 2016 Red Dot Award for Design Concept.
Karim Rashid is a prolific design working in furniture, lighting, packaging and interior design. His designs are easily recognizable both for their sensual curves and bold color choices.
It would be unsurprising to see Mathias Bengtsson‘s work in a museum rather than a personal home. His furniture designs “resemble domestic objects which are made strange” rather than making pieces of art functional. His pieces show a tension between handcrafted stylings and industrial engineering.
