The Hottest Debuts at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition

The 15th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2018) was held from April 29 to May 4 this year. Housed at the China International Exhibition Center in Beijing, this event caps off the 2018 show season for the car industry. The diversified auto show is where the public can see over 1,022 vehicles ranging from passenger cars, commercial vehicles, deluxe modified vehicles, and new energy vehicles.

The 2018 Auto China event featured debuts from a variety of brands including BMW, Buick, Infiniti, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Maybach, Nissan, Volkswagon, and Volvo. All in all, there were 105 world premieres along with 30 Asia premieres and 64 concept cars. As we have seen with subsequent car shows, new energy vehicles dominated the show. Buick is one of China’s most popular luxury entry brands, so it makes sense that they would debut their newest all-electric concept SUV at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition. The Enspire All-Electric Concept SUV from Buick is an exploration of Buick’s bold design ideas and innovative technologies for future mobility. Buick’s eMotion electric propulsion technology generates a maximum power of 410 kW. This power enables the concept SUV to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 4 seconds. The Enspire can travel up to 370 miles on a single charge. The concept vehicle is designed for fast, wireless charging. It can be charged to 80 percent capacity within just 40 minutes.

The Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury that debuted at Auto China 2018 wants to be the last word in all-electric luxury. The design of the crossover follows the philosophy of Sensual Purity. The concept is an electric car with four compact permanent-magnet synchronous motors.

“The Vision Mercedes-Maybach Ultimate Luxury is a totally new archetype of a kind never seen before,” says Gorden Wagener, Chief Design Officer at Daimler AG. “Our concept combines the DNA of an SUV with that of a saloon to produce an ultra-modern SUV of three-box design,” says Wagener. “With sensuality and pure sophistication, we have created a timeless vehicle that underscores the position of Mercedes-Maybach as the ultimate luxury brand.”

The long-awaited seventh generation ES luxury sedan from Lexus made a splash on the world stage with its debut at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition. The ES 350 is entirely new from the ground up. It features a longer, wider stance. The silhouette is sleek. The new ES has first of its kind technology and a more powerful engine. It is the most advanced ES to date. “Elegance persists and athleticism emerges,” is how Car and Driver describe the new Lexus ES luxury sedan.

The S90 Ambience Concept is a new vehicle from the premium carmaker, Volvo. Ambience is set to be the first sensory experience vehicle. This unique concept redefines in-car luxury by focusing on visuals, sound, and scent. This three-seater executive sedan focuses on chauffeured passengers in the rear seat. Passengers can personalize the interior settings using the intuitive smartphone app.

“The Ambience Concept redefines luxury by taking it beyond material choices, creating a car that connects with your senses,” said Robin Page, head of design at Volvo Cars. “The design explores how people feel inside the car and enables them to influence their own mood and well-being.”
