How Tesla’s Roadster Compares to Top Cars on the Market

Tesla’s new Roadster isn’t on the market yet, but it’s already breaking records. Compared to movie character Tony Stark, Elon Musk is known for his exciting innovations and new designs. The second-generation Tesla Roadster, announced late last year, is no exception. While the original model was fast, this new production will amplify the vehicle to supercar status. It’s electric range will get a major boost from its massive new battery pack, allowing the Roadster to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.9 seconds with a top speed rumored around 250 miles per hour. If these predictions are correct in the final models, the Roadster will be one of the fastest road-legal vehicles once it’s released in 2020. Here’s how other top cars on the market compare to the new Roadster.

Roadster vs. Mercedes Project One

While the Mercedes Project One and Tesla Roadster have similar designs, the two vehicles have very different performance. The Project One vehicle clocks in at an estimated 520 horsepower with a similar structure to a street legal Formula One car. The vehicle also accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 2.6 seconds with a top speed of 217 miles per hour. While these numbers are only seconds more than the Roadster, Tesla comes out on top with its 250 miles per hour – with even faster speeds being rumored for the high performance version.

On the electric side, Project One reports a zero emissions, all electric range of 14 miles while the Roadster blows this stat out of the water with a whopping 620 miles. However, the Tesla model also lacks a gasoline engine with the Mercedes having both electric and gas engines. One of the biggest differences between the two cars is pricing. On the market for about $2.7 million, the Mercedes Project One is made for luxury. With a price tag starting at $200,000, Tesla’s Roadster offers a more affordable option even including its possible “Founders Edition” model.

Roadster vs. Koenigsegg Agera RS

The Swedish supercar Koenigsegg Agera RS is currently the fastest production car on the market based on top speed. While both the Agera and Tesla Roadster are two-door vehicles, the Roadster is actually a four person vehicle, while the Swedish car only seats two. The Koenigsegg Agera RS also recently set the record for fastest speed at 277.9 miles per hour. While Elon Musk declined to give an exact top speed for the new Roadster, he stated the Tesla model would top out speed just “over 250 mph” so only time will tell if it can pass the Agera’s record. The Koenigsegg car is still considered to be a production vehicle, however the company has only produced 25 in this design. The Tesla Roadster will have a much larger production number and therefor be available to many more potential buyers.

Roadster vs. Dodge Demon

Promoted as the world’s first street-legal production drag racer vehicle, the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is powerful. With drag radial tires and a supercharged V8 engine, this Challenger boasts the highest G-force by a production car as well as the first wheelie. There was even talk of banning the Demon from public roads for being so powerful – yet it still ended up on the production line. The Tesla Roadster holds the quickest acceleration with the Dodge reaching 0 to 60 mph in 2.3 seconds, more than Tesla’s 1.9 seconds. Starting at $84,995, the Dodge Demon hits the market at a lower price than the Tesla Roadster but with options to upgrade.

Compared to some of the top models on the market, Tesla’s new Roadster beats them in nearly every category. Want to see some of the supercars for yourself? Check out these top auto shows for 2018 to find a show near you!
