Paying homage to this global icon on its 70th Anniversary, Land Rover Classic is creating the most powerful, most refined Defender ever. A V8-powered, 405PS, collector’s edition they are calling Defender Works V8.
An International Adventurer
First introduced to the public in 1948, the U.K.’s iconic all-terrain expedition vehicle has only grown more powerful with age. Known for its off-road and adventure status, the Defender has conquered the some of the world’s most inhospitable territories. Now to celebrate it’s reign, the Land Rover Classic has been re-imagined for the most luxurious explorations from your neighborhood market to the overgrown wild.
Though it will pack a mean punch, the Defender Works V8 will keep its classic, unrefined, boxy aesthetic. But under the hood and inside the cab, it’s an entirely different story.
The Power Within
The centerpiece of the Defender Works V8 is the 5.0-liter engine, which makes 400 horsepower and 379 lb-ft of torque. It allows the SUV to sprint from 0-60 mph in a mere 5.6 seconds. It can also hit 106 mph – impressive for something so aerodynamically challenged. The eight-speed ZF automatic transmission features a sport mode and quickshift response, completing each gear change in 200 milliseconds.
There are also upgraded brakes, and a “handling kit” (new springs, dampers, and anti-roll bars), reworked suspension, and 18-inch “Sawtooth” alloy wheels wrapped in 265/65 all-terrain tires, LED headlights, and model-specific exterior color schemes. It’s the fastest and most powerful Defender to ever leave the Land Rover factory.
Luxury Interior
The limited run Defender will be available in eight different colors, which are complemented by a black roof, wheel arches, grille and other black exterior accents. Inside the vehicle you’ll find ‘Windsor Leather’ adorning the dashboard, door panels, and headlining. You will also find the RECARO sports seats trimmed in Taurus leather. The infotainment system features Land Rover Classic’s newly-launched DAB Classic Radio, surround sound speakers, smartphone integration and GPS navigation to keep you and your adventures smart. The Defender looks and acts as powerful as it drives.
Four or Seven Passengers
There are two body designs to choose from depending on one’s daily motoring needs. Buyers can choose between the 2-Door Defender 90 and the 4-door Defender 100. The 2-door Defender 90 is maneuverable with luxurious interior space that can carry up to 4 passengers. With the 4-door Defender 110 you can find maximum loading capacity and luxurious interior space to carry up to 7 passengers.
“We knew the demand was there for a powerful and fast Defender; the Land Rover authenticity is the ultimate finishing touch for discerning clients purchasing these collector’s-edition Defenders,” said Tim Hannig, director of Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works, which will build the vehicles.
And to make this even more of a celebration, only 150 will be produced and only for the European market each at a starting price of £150,000 (about $207,000 USD). Unfortunately for American Defender fans, it won’t be available in the United States. But there’s always the aftermarket. You may also enjoy a look at the new Range Rover Velar.
